Antiatlas is Jasna Horvat’s literary record of travel, written in Osijek after journeys to China, India, Jordan, Israel, Mexico, Brazil and many European cities. Rather than offering a conventional atlas, the book asks what travellers carry, whom they meet, how movement changes perception and what remains in memory after returning home.
Travel writing, cultural study, intimate itinerary and personal reflection meet in discussions of scripts and literacy, from Hebrew and Mayan writing to Llull’s Ars magna and the Croatian Glagolitic tradition. Cultural figures, guides, chance encounters and close friends accompany the author’s geographical and intellectual movement.
Some journeys entered books already being written; others became the first impulse for later works. Structured partly in conversation with the historical ars apodemica, the art of travel, Antiatlas addresses both those who travel and those who seek new coordinates within everyday life. It is a homage to travel, Croatian literature, friendship and the creative act of finding oneself in place.
