The first Glagolitic sign, Az, unites a letter, the number one and the first-person pronoun. From its enduring question, Who am I?, Jasna Horvat develops a historical novel about language, identity and cultural memory.
The novel follows Constantine the Philosopher, later known as Saint Cyril, and his brother Methodius during the creation and early dissemination of the Glagolitic script. Several narrative voices illuminate their journeys between Constantinople, Cherson, Moravia, Dalmatia, Venice and Rome.
The Glagolitic alphabet shapes both the subject and the architecture of the novel. Letters carry alphabetic, numerical and symbolic values, while the arrangement of chapters follows their numerical order. The resulting structure joins historical narrative, literary play, geometry and the cultural history of writing.
Jasna Horvat received the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts Award for Literature for the novel in 2010. Andizet published the second English edition in 2024. Jadranka Zlomislić and Slaven Lendić translated the novel into English.
The complete English edition is available in open access under the Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence.
